PDI is committed to managing its operations in an environmentally responsible manner, by minimizing its ecological footprint, providing a healthy work environment for its employees and cooperating with the community in order to ensure a responsible approach to our daily operations.

We call this policy: 3 x 3

Why 3x3?

We apply the well known mantra of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to three areas:

Reduce

FSC® certification
We guide clients towards the use of eco-friendly papers with maximum post-consumer waste (PCW), thereby reducing the need to cut more trees. Other than the PWC content, these FSC® certified papers also only contain pulp harvested from certified forests using responsible practices. In 2011 alone, we purchased 3,500,000 pounds of FSC® certified paper.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
PDI uses soya based inks that have a reduced VOC content of less that 5%. (Certified by Terrachoice - Method 24)
Water based varnish is used in order to minimize COVs and to facilitate the recycling of the printed product once its lifecycle has ended.

Reuse

Waste paper
We reuse all waste paper several times to begin our make ready process before putting ink on any virgin paper in the press.

Recycle

Paper
Waste paper created at each phase of production process is recycled.
Inks
Left over inks are collected in barrels and sent to ink supplier for recycling into black newspaper inks.
PLA plastic lamination offered by PDI has the following characteristics:
  • Made with renewable plant resources
  • Certified Compostable (ASTM-D6400)
  • Biodegradable in a managed composting facility, leaving no plastic residues

Reduce

G7 certification
This prepress certification that PDI achieved in 2010 reduced our make ready time and in consequence, also lowered the consumption of waste paper by 40%.

Reuse

Blanket wash
PDI recycles its blanket wash on site for reuse.
Rags
Rags are de-inked and recycled for further use.
Water
PDI filters the water it uses in the production process so that it can be returned to the community.
Pallets
Broken pallets are fixed and reused.

Recycle

Paper and cardboard boxes are all recycled.
Plates
Plates are collected and recycled for their aluminum.
Pallets that are not longer capable of being repaired are recycled.
Strapping and cellophane
All strapping and cellophane used in our finishing process and on our pallets is recycled.

Production Facility

Reduce

Electricity to heat
Insolated curtains minimize the space that needs to be heated and rapid opening doors keep the heat in when going to and from the shop floor to shipping.
Electricity to light
High performance ballasts have been installed to consume 50% less electricity. Furthermore, special fluorescent tubes provide balanced lighting in the work environment to simulate daylight, thereby reducing eye strain.
Electricity and Water to humidify
We must maintain a minimum level of humidity to stabilize the paper we use. Hence, a new humidification system was installed in 2010. This new system works by ionization and compression and has reduced the consumption of electricity and water by 20%
Paper/Electronic pay stubs
Since 2010 our employees have been receiving an electronic pay stub in order to eliminate paper and envelopes that were previously used on a weekly basis.
Water fountains
Installation of water fountains in order to reduce use of bottled water on our premises. Our policy is to not have any bottled water in the vending machines on premises.

Reuse

Ceramic cups
The reuse of ceramic cups has been introduced to eliminate Styrofoam cups being used on premises.
CD jewel cases
All cases are reused in our prepress department.

Recycle

Heat
In order to save on electricity to heat, we recycle the heat generated by the presses and redistribute in the production facility.
Office paper
All office paper is recycled.
Cans & Plastic bottles
These items are recycled from our cafeteria and throughout the facility.
Printer cartridges
All printer cartridges for office use are sent back to the manufacturer to be recycled.
Computers
All old computers are sent to a recycling center for disposal.
